Training workshop on preparing shadow reports on ICRPD (Jerba, 26-28 October 2021)

The workshop was held from October 26 to 28, 2021 in Djerba (Tunisia), to prepare the shadow reports on the status of the rights of persons with disabilities in Libya under Article 35, paragraph 01 of the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, based on the “Guiding Principles on the Document on the Convention on the Rights of Persons.” Persons with Disabilities” prepared by the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Objectives

The objective of the workshop was to strengthen and develop the capacities of members of Libyan CSOs to prepare the shadow report on the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and to use the process of preparing the report as an opportunity to assess the status of the rights of persons with disabilities in Libya, the progress achieved, identify the most important difficulties and challenges in the field, and empower them Develop a plan to complete the parallel report as soon as possible, based on the guiding principles and standards for the document on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Participants

28 participants from LibyanCSOs participated in the workshop. The majority of them are among the senior leaders in the participating organizations, and they were distributed as follows:

Distribution by gender: 07 women, including a woman with disabilities, and 21 men, including 05 people with disabilities.
Distribution by organization type: 07 the General Bar of Lawyers, 08 organizations for the rights of persons with disabilities, 08 for human, child and women's rights, one for relief, 03 for women's rights, and one for legal aid.
Distribution by regions: 07 from the eastern region, 12 from the western region, 02 from the southern region, and 01 from the central region. This means that the geographical and regional representation was relatively balanced.
Distribution by type of disability: 05 people with disabilities (about 18%), of whom only one woman is a wheelchair user, two are wheelchair users, two are visually impaired, and the remaining 23 are not disabled

Results

- Completion of 06 initial projects for parallel thematic reports that are part of the parallel report.
- A joint meeting brought together the heads and representatives of organizations of persons with disabilities participating in the workshop to conclude a joint charter to coordinate their efforts in advocating the rights of persons with disabilities in Libya.
- A preliminary partnership agreement between the "General League of Persons with Disabilities" and the "General Bar Association" to activate the role of the judiciary and lawyers in defending and advocating human rights issues for persons with disabilities.
